تقع العقبة في واحدة من أكثر بيئات الأردن جفافاً: أمطار شحيحة لا تهطل إلا في أيام معدودة من السنة، وصيف طويل شديد الحرارة، وتبخّر مرتفع، وتربة رملية ضعيفة الاحتفاظ بالماء ومتأثّرة بالملوحة الساحلية. في هذه الظروف يبقى الظلّ قليلاً في ساحات المدارس والأرصفة والساحات العامة، وأي غطاء أخضر يُضاف إلى المدينة يجب أن يُصمَّم ليعيش بأقل قدر ممكن من المياه في بلد يعاني شحّاً مائياً حادّاً. والتحدّي الأكبر ليس في الزراعة نفسها بل فيما بعدها؛ فالشتلة التي تُغرس ثم تُترك بلا سقاية منتظمة في صيفها الأول نادراً ما تصمد، ويضيع الجهد والمال معاً.
«العقبة الخضراء» حملة تشجير تتعامل مع الشجرة كالتزام يمتدّ سنة كاملة لا كفعالية ليوم واحد. نبدأ بمسح الموقع مع الجهة المسؤولة عنه لتحديد أماكن الغرس ومصدر المياه، ثم نختار أنواعاً محلية متحمّلة للجفاف من مشتل الجمعية — السدر والأراك والسنط (الأكاسيا) ونباتات الزينة المحلية قليلة الاستهلاك المائي — بدلاً من الأصناف المستوردة العطشى.
قبل يوم الزراعة نُجهّز الحُفَر ونحسّن التربة الرملية بالسماد العضوي. وفي يوم الزراعة يعمل المتطوّعون والطلبة والعائلات جنباً إلى جنب مع فريقنا على كل خطوة: عمق الحفرة، ووضع الشتلة، وبناء حوض الريّ حول الجذع، وفرش طبقة من المهاد للحدّ من التبخّر، وتركيب دعامة وواقٍ للشتلات المكشوفة. ثم يأتي الجزء الذي يحسم النتيجة: نتّفق مع كل موقع على شخص مسؤول بالاسم عن السقاية، ونضع جدول ريّ للسنة الأولى، وننفّذ زيارات ميدانية دورية نفحص فيها كل شجرة، ونستبدل ما لم ينجُ منها، ونصلح ما تعطّل من خطوط الريّ. ويُدوَّن كل موقع في سجلّ ميداني يتضمّن الموقع والصنف وتاريخ الغرس ونتيجة كل زيارة.
تُنفَّذ الحملة داخل مدينة العقبة: ساحات المدارس أولاً، ثم الأحياء السكنية والمساحات العامة التي نحصل على موافقة الجهة المسؤولة عنها. المستفيدون المباشرون هم الطلبة الذين يقضون نهارهم في ساحات بلا ظلّ، والأسر التي تسكن الشوارع التي نزرعها، والمتطوّعون الذين يتعلّمون طريقة الغرس والعناية ويستطيعون تكرارها في بيوتهم. أما المستفيد غير المباشر فهو المدينة كلها.
لن نَعِدك بأرقام لم نقِسها بعد. ما نعِد به هو ظلّ حقيقي فوق ساحة مدرسة كانت مكشوفة، وأرصفة أقلّ حرارة في الصيف، وغبار أقلّ يحمله الهواء، وأشجار محلية تجذب الطيور والملقّحات وتثبّت التربة. والأنواع التي نختارها تحتاج ماءً أقلّ بكثير بعد أن ترسّخ جذورها خلال أوّل عامين، ولهذا نركّز جهدنا على تلك السنة الأولى تحديداً. وسننشر نسبة بقاء الأشجار كما تظهر في سجلّنا الميداني، سواء جاءت في صالحنا أو دون توقّعاتنا.
يذهب تبرّعك إلى بنود محدّدة يمكنك تتبّعها. خمسة دنانير تشتري شتلة أراك أو سنط من مشتل الجمعية بسعرها المعلن، وهو ما يُبقي المشتل نفسه قائماً. خمسة عشر ديناراً تغطّي شجرة كاملة: الشتلة، وتحسين التربة والمهاد، والدعامة وحوض الريّ، ثم ماء السقاية وزيارات المتابعة طوال سنتها الأولى. ومئة دينار تغطّي نحو ست أشجار مع نصيبها من كلفة الأدوات والنقل. ونحتفظ بجزء من كل تبرّع مخصَّصاً لسنة الرعاية الأولى لا يُصرف في يوم الزراعة، لأن الشجرة التي لا تُسقى بعد غرسها كأنّها لم تُغرس.Aqaba sits in one of Jordan's driest environments: rain falls on only a handful of days a year, summers are long and punishing, evaporation is high, and the sandy coastal soil holds little water and carries salt. Shade is scarce in school yards, along pavements and across public squares, and in a country under severe water stress any green cover added to the city has to be built to survive on very little water. The hardest part is not the planting itself — it is everything that comes after. A seedling that goes into the ground and is then left without regular watering through its first summer rarely survives, and the effort and the money are lost with it.
Green Aqaba treats a tree as a commitment that lasts a full year, not a one-day event. We start by surveying each site with whoever is responsible for it, agreeing where trees can go and where the water will come from. We then select drought-tolerant native species from the society's own nursery — Sidr, Arak, Acacia and low-water native ornamentals — rather than thirsty imported varieties.
Before planting day we dig the pits and improve the sandy soil with compost. On the day itself, volunteers, students and families work through every step alongside our team: pit depth, setting the seedling, building a watering basin around the trunk, spreading mulch to slow evaporation, and fitting a stake and guard where a seedling is exposed. Then comes the part that decides the outcome. We agree with each site on a named person responsible for watering, set a watering schedule for the first year, and run regular field visits to check every tree, replace the ones that did not make it, and repair any irrigation that has failed. Each site is written into a field register: location, species, planting date, and the result of every visit.
The campaign runs inside the city of Aqaba — school yards first, then residential neighbourhoods and public spaces where we have the permission of whoever manages them. The direct beneficiaries are students who spend their day in yards without shade, families living on the streets we plant, and volunteers who learn how to plant and care for a tree and can repeat it at home. Indirectly, the whole city benefits.
We will not promise you figures we have not measured. What we do promise is real shade over a yard that had none, pavements that are cooler in summer, less dust carried in the air, and native trees that draw back birds and pollinators and hold the soil in place. The species we choose need far less water once their roots are established over the first couple of years, which is precisely why we concentrate our effort on that first year. We will publish the survival rate exactly as our field register shows it, whether it flatters us or falls short of what we hoped.
Your donation goes to line items you can follow. Five dinars buys an Arak or Acacia seedling from the society's nursery at its listed price, which also keeps the nursery itself running. Fifteen dinars covers a complete tree: the seedling, soil improvement and mulch, the stake and watering basin, then the water and the follow-up visits through its first year. One hundred dinars covers roughly six trees together with their share of tools and transport. And a portion of every donation is held back for that first year of care instead of being spent on planting day, because a tree that is not watered after it goes in may as well never have been planted.
