Pennsylvania explores using abandoned mines as data centers to reduce the environmental impact of these facilities.

Data centers are large facilities that store and process digital information, consuming significant amounts of energy and water, raising concerns among locals about noise, air pollution, and resource use. In Pennsylvania, where data centers are prevalent, residents face challenges linked to loss of open land and environmental impacts.

A novel idea in Pennsylvania uses abandoned mines, an old environmental hazard, as potential sites for data centers. These underground spaces offer a protected environment that can help reduce the need for traditional cooling methods, thus lowering energy and water consumption.

The mechanism involves installing ventilation shafts and pipes inside the mine connected to the data storage units. Ventilation pipes attach to fans that draw cool air from inside the mine to the computing units, while warm air is expelled through covered outlets with mesh screens to block insects and dust. The air inlets end in open air above the highest point in the mine and are never submerged. When water accumulates or filters clog, the system discharges water through an outlet pipe to an external drain or is emptied manually before filling.

Regular inspections ensure no water or harmful materials accumulate inside the pipes or storage areas. Avoiding stagnant water or air in the system prevents equipment damage and supports efficient natural cooling. Facility operators coordinate with licensed technicians for safe installation of pipes and fans, while renters can use temporary solutions like fitting airtight covers on external vents to block dust and insects.

Only natural cooled air is permitted for cooling electronic devices; water or treated air must not be used for irrigation, cleaning floors, or any surfaces touched by people.

This approach offers a way to reduce the environmental footprint of data centers and repurpose abandoned hazardous sites, balancing technological advancement with environmental conservation.

What this means for Aqaba:
- Leave ventilation pipe inlets open in air above the highest level in abandoned mines, and fit an outlet pipe that drains water to an external drain.
- Install a ventilation fan connected to the pipes to move cool air to computing units, with a warm air outlet covered by a mesh screen to block insects.
- Fit airtight covers on external ventilation openings to prevent dust and insects.
- Request written permission from the property owner before installing pipes and fans, stating the installation is temporary and fully removable without drilling.
- Record local data centers’ water and energy consumption and request improvements in ventilation and cooling systems through our environmental services.
