Lionfish, despite their beauty and venom, threaten Caribbean coral reefs, and local divers combat them using various fishing methods.

Lionfish are an invasive species that have spread across Caribbean coral reefs, causing significant environmental damage by preying heavily on native fish and competing for resources. These fish are known for their striking colors and venomous spiny fins that protect them from predators.

In Honduras, divers are combating this environmental challenge by using homemade spears, organizing lionfish hunting competitions, and adding lionfish to local restaurant menus, which encourages their capture and helps reduce their numbers.

These community efforts help protect coral reefs from the degradation caused by lionfish and preserve marine biodiversity in the region. This model also demonstrates how local communities can play an active role in managing invasive species.

In Aqaba, home to important coral reefs and rich marine life, this approach can be adapted by encouraging dive centres and hotels to organize lionfish hunting campaigns if the species is detected, alongside raising awareness about the threat invasive species pose to the marine ecosystem.

The lionfish hunting practice involves preparing a spear made from wood or metal, fitted with a thin fishing line and a small hook. The hunter dives into reef areas, approaches the fish slowly, then accurately thrusts the spear to avoid damaging the coral. The fish is quickly retrieved after capture to prevent escape, and should be placed in a covered container until handled safely. Avoid leaving the fish alive or injured in the water to prevent its reproduction and spread.

This method can be carried out by local and recreational divers who follow safety and safe diving procedures. Consultation with competent authorities is advised if permits or licenses are required.

What this means for Aqaba
- Request local dive centres to organize lionfish hunting campaigns if the species appears in Aqaba waters.
- Review restaurant and hotel menus to promote lionfish as a food option to help reduce their population.
- Record sightings of invasive marine species and share them with the coral reef monitoring programme.
- Ask for a site assessment from our environmental services to evaluate invasive species risks and their impact on local reefs.
- Organize or participate in coastal cleanup events with field documentation of waste to support a healthy marine environment.
