A recent study in Vietnam reveals the heavy toll of plastic pollution on fishers, highlighting opportunities for better marine waste management in Aqaba.
Plastic pollution in marine environments poses a growing challenge that deeply impacts small-scale fishers in Vietnam. Items such as plastic bags, bottles, aquaculture feed sacks, and nylon fishing nets frequently entangle fishers’ equipment, disrupting their catches and causing significant financial losses.
These plastic materials damage fishing nets and tools, while also polluting the marine ecosystems that these communities depend on. The accumulation of plastic waste threatens marine biodiversity, which in turn jeopardizes fish stocks over time.
Aqaba can draw lessons from this situation by monitoring local marine waste sources, particularly those related to aquaculture and daily activities of residents and visitors. Installing a mesh strainer on rainwater or greywater drainage pipes can intercept plastics before they reach the sea.
For instance, attach a mesh strainer to a rainwater drain pipe that leads into a basin covered with a mesh. Water flows through the mesh, which catches the plastic debris. The pipe inlet should be above the water level inside the basin to prevent backflow, and the basin must be emptied the same day to avoid mosquito breeding.
What this means for Aqaba:
- Attach mesh strainers to rainwater drainage pipes in homes, schools, and hotels, directing flow into mesh-covered basins for plastic collection.
- Empty basins containing plastic debris daily into proper solid waste containers.
- Use «our environmental services» to assess local marine waste hotspots.
- Request aquaculture farms to review their plastic use and disposal practices.
- Join upcoming coastal cleanup events and document collected waste types to support local management efforts.
