Seawater desalination is the process of removing salts and minerals from salty water to make it suitable for drinking and other uses. Traditional desalination methods often produce concentrated salty water called brine, which can harm marine environments when discharged.
Scientists have developed a solar-powered desalination system that uses self-cleaning technology to turn seawater into fresh water while separating nearly all salt as a solid instead of releasing harmful brine. This approach reduces environmental impact and helps preserve marine ecosystems.
Moreover, valuable minerals like lithium can be recovered from the solid salt, turning desalination waste into an economic resource.
In this system, seawater is drawn through a pipe into a solar-heated tank where sunlight evaporates the water. The vapor is then condensed in a separate unit to produce fresh water. The remaining salt settles in a separate crystallization tank as solid crystals that can be collected later. This method avoids discharging brine into the sea, protecting sensitive coral reefs and marine life in the Gulf of Aqaba.
The system includes a valve that directs salty water to the crystallization tank instead of discharging it directly, a mesh strainer to block large particles, and a condensation tank to collect fresh water. These parts must be operated within the same day to prevent salt buildup or standing water, which can spoil the process and cause pollution.
What this means for Aqaba:
- Request hotels and dive centers to inspect existing desalination setups and install valves to channel salty water into separate containers for solid salt collection.
- Coordinate with relevant authorities and port authorities to explore solar-powered desalination options that reduce emissions and protect marine environments.
- Ask schools and environmental clubs to educate students about sustainable desalination technologies.
- Install a covered barrel with a valve and mesh strainer at homes using small-scale desalination units.
- Request a site assessment from our environmental services to improve water systems and reduce impact on Aqaba's coral reefs.
