Masses of floating weeds in Malawi’s Chia Lagoon are disrupting farming and fishing, negatively impacting local livelihoods.

Malawi’s Chia Lagoon, the country’s largest, is currently experiencing a serious environmental challenge with dense masses of floating weeds covering extensive areas of its waters. These weeds obstruct water flow and flood lands previously used for agriculture, negatively impacting irrigated maize and rice production.

The floating plants make it difficult for farmers and fishers to reach their fields and fishing zones, disrupting food production and threatening local food security. This situation continues seven months after the rainy season ended, as the land cannot absorb excess water due to the floating weeds trapping it on the surface.

To address this, residents can use barriers such as screens made of cotton fabric or floating fences made from water-resistant materials, installed at the inlet of channels or drains feeding the fields to catch weeds and prevent their spread into agricultural land. The barrier is fixed at the lower edge of the pipe or channel to allow water to pass but hold back floating weeds, then removed on the same day to prevent water stagnation or decay of trapped plants above it. It is important to keep the barrier clean and free of substances that could pollute water or attract insects.

Farmers in rented lands or landowners can implement this method themselves, as it requires no permanent modifications or special permits. Meanwhile, responsible authorities or agricultural institutions can install larger barriers on main channels under supervision of qualified technicians.

What this means for Aqaba
- Request Aqaba farmers to install cotton fabric screens on small irrigation channels to prevent accumulation of floating weeds.
- Monitor water channels and drains daily in Aqaba to remove any weed buildup on the same day.
- Measure water levels in fields after rainfall to identify waterlogging and weed impact areas.
- Submit reports of drainage problems to our environmental services for assessment and advice.
- Ensure no harmful chemicals are used in cleaning the screens to protect water and marine environments.
